Cataract Surgery Referrals – CCG request
31 March 2022
We have received a request from the commissioners about the way that we currently refer for cataract surgery. You will be aware there are huge differences in waiting times for cataract surgery between the main hospitals and the independent providers in the community. The CCG is keen to try to direct patients towards the community providers in an effort to reduce and equalise waiting lists, where it is appropriate to do so. . However it seems that patients are a little reluctant because they have been told that “they must be seen in a hospital”, by us, the referrer.
Could everyone take a moment to reflect on the language they use when speaking to the patient about making a routine cataract referral, to ensure we are not unconsciously adding a hospital bias.
The commissioner has committed to providing us with regular updates on the waiting times across the County, please see below. In future we will publish these on this website, so please do check back regularly.
